PVD Partitions Explained: Finishes, Uses and Care

Elite Edge Interiors: PVD Partitions Explained: Finishes, Uses and Care

PVD partitions are a favourite of interior designers who want the richness of metal without the weight and upkeep of solid brass or steel. The name comes from the finishing process, physical vapour deposition, which bonds a thin metallic layer onto a surface. This guide explains what PVD is, where PVD partitions work, which finishes are popular and how to look after them.

What is PVD?

Physical vapour deposition is a coating method carried out in a vacuum chamber. A metal such as titanium, or a compound formed with it, is vaporised and deposited as a very thin, tightly bonded film on stainless steel or other base material. The result is a hard, uniform colour layer that resists scratches, fading and tarnishing better than a conventional paint or electroplated finish.

PVD is widely used on watches, taps, door handles and architectural metalwork. In interiors, it gives stainless steel sections the look of gold, rose gold, bronze, black or champagne metal while keeping the strength of stainless steel underneath.

Why designers choose PVD partitions

  • Premium look. PVD finishes give a deep, even metallic colour that suits hotels, showrooms, restaurants, luxury homes and corporate reception areas.
  • Durability. The coating is harder than ordinary plating, so it holds up against daily contact and cleaning.
  • Colour range. Typical finishes include gold, rose gold, black, bronze, copper and champagne, in mirror, satin and brushed textures.
  • Design freedom. Metal sections can be shaped into slim frames, decorative grilles, louvres and screens that are difficult to make in timber.
  • Low maintenance. A soft cloth is usually enough to keep the finish clean.

Where PVD partitions are used

Living and dining areas

A metal and glass screen separates the living room from the dining area while keeping both spaces bright. Slim PVD frames give a luxurious outline without cutting the view.

Entrances and foyers

A decorative screen at the entrance gives privacy from the front door and makes a strong first impression. Louvred or jali patterns let air and light pass through.

Hotels, restaurants and showrooms

Partitions define seating areas and brand zones without closing them off. Gold and bronze tones pair well with warm lighting.

Offices and reception areas

A black or champagne PVD frame with clear or frosted glass gives a professional feel and separates workspaces cleanly.

Wardrobes and display units

PVD profiles are also used on wardrobe shutters and display cabinets. You can see related options in our wardrobes range.

Popular finishes and how to match them

  • Brushed gold and champagne: warm and classic, good with wood, marble and neutral walls.
  • Rose gold: soft and contemporary, flatters pastel and blush palettes.
  • Black: sharp and modern, works well with concrete, white walls and glass.
  • Bronze and copper: rich and earthy, suited to dark woods and leather.

Choose the finish with your light fittings, door handles and tap fittings in mind. Repeating one metal tone across a room looks planned and calm. Mixing two metals can work, but one should lead.

PVD and glass together

Most PVD partitions combine metal frames with glass. The type of glass changes the character: clear glass gives openness, fluted or fabric glass gives privacy and texture, tinted glass adds depth and reflective glass gives a mirrored feel. Check our glass collection for finishes that pair well with PVD frames. For safety, panels should use toughened or laminated glass of the right thickness.

What to ask before you order

  1. Base material. Ask what metal sits under the PVD coating and the grade of the material.
  2. Finish sample. Look at a physical sample under your own lighting. Gold can look very different under warm and cool lights.
  3. Section size and strength. Larger or taller partitions need heavier sections or additional supports.
  4. Fabrication and joints. Neat welds and clean joints are what separate a premium installation from an average one.
  5. Installation. The fixing method into floor and ceiling must suit your structure.
  6. Warranty and care guidance. Ask for written care instructions and any warranty on the coating.

Care and cleaning

  • Wipe with a soft, damp microfibre cloth and dry afterwards.
  • Do not use abrasive pads, bleach or strong acids on the finish.
  • Remove fingerprints with a mild glass or surface cleaner that is suitable for coated metal.
  • Avoid dragging furniture or sharp items against the frames.

Designing with PVD: a few ideas

PVD works best when it is used with restraint. A single slim gold frame across a pale wall often looks more luxurious than metal used everywhere. Pair black PVD with white marble and warm wood for a crisp contrast, or use brushed champagne with soft grey and cream for a calmer look. Repeating the finish in small details, such as handles, lamp bases and picture frames, ties the room together. Choose patterns, such as vertical louvres or a simple grid, that match the architecture of the room, and keep sightlines in mind so that the partition guides movement rather than blocking it.

Lighting also affects how metal finishes appear. Warm, directional lighting brings out the depth of gold and bronze, while cool lighting makes black and steel tones look sharper. Test the finish near your actual light fittings before final approval.

Budget considerations

The price of a PVD partition depends on the base metal, the finish, the glass, the size of the panels and the amount of fabrication. Decorative patterns cost more than plain frames. Instead of asking only for a rate per square foot, ask for a drawing and a specification so you can compare quotes fairly.

Frequently asked questions

Does PVD coating fade?

PVD is known for resisting fading and tarnishing better than ordinary plating or paint, though no finish is entirely immune to damage from harsh chemicals or abrasion.

Is PVD suitable for bathrooms and humid areas?

The coating resists moisture well, but the base material and installation quality matter. Ask your supplier about suitability for wet areas.

Can PVD partitions be customised?

Yes. Frame patterns, panel sizes, finishes and glass types can usually be customised to your design.
